The Unfortunate Truth

“Everybody want to be a bodybuilder, but ain’t nobody want to lift no heavy ass weights.”
–Ronnie Coleman

What drives you? What makes you want to be better? Is it to keep up with your kids? Is it to be more able bodied? Is it to compete? To be better than the person next to you? To accomplish something you thought impossible?

These are the things you need to think about before entering the gym. No amount of caffeine, stimulants, or inspirational photos can get your adrenals going like raw internal motivation. Unfortunately, it is not enough just to have a goal. It is not enough just to say you want that time or that you want a certain total. Your motivation can always be compromised if you just want something for the sake of wanting it. If you want to get there—to truly reach your potential—you have to make that decision every single day. You have to set up the network of support, get the coaching you need, and put in the time and the hard work. Anyone can talk, but it’s the steps you take that will show how bad you want it.

Everyone is tired, sore, mentally exhausted from work, and fatigued from yesterday’s workout, but these things don’t put pounds on the bar. These reasons, they can make or break you. The quote above brings out a good point for any sport: everybody wants to be the best, but not everyone is willing to put in the time, effort, sweat, and tears into their training to become the best. These are the things that will set you apart. These are the things that make it worth it in the end. You don’t just go to the gym and get a work out in, you train, and you train damn hard to make your goal a reality!

If you truly want that goal bad enough, if you truly want it for the right reasons, if you dream about it night and day, then it’s time to get into the gym and bust your ass to make it happen. There is no right time or waiting just a little bit longer. There is no fad diet that you need to finish before you start to weight train. No coach, gym, or program can make it happen for you —it has to exist in you. Then, and only then, can we help bring it out and make it a reality!
